Pinkeye is a painful, weakening condition that can severely affect animal productivity. If left untreated, damage to the eye can be severe enough for blindness to be permanent. The predisposing causes of Pinkeye include dust, sunlight and flies. Sunlight can increase the severity of the disease and flies can also contribute to its spread.
The eye patch can be glued over the affected eye of the cow or calf after the application of a suitable eye ointment. This offers an effective once only treatment, which lessens the severity of the disease.
